Eduoard Manet's Olympia shocked the art world, one of the reasons for that disgust was the point of view which suggested the viewer was the prostitute's next client. Interestingly the model Victorine Meurent was a well known painter as well as Manet's favourite model. Manet took the well known conventions of classical nudes and twisted every little detail, to suggest a more modern interpretation. The high contrast studio lighting flattens the space in another strange anticipation of photography.
