Gwen John (1876 - 1939) had a turbulent ten year romance with sculptor Auguste Rodin, after which she turned to religion and her desire for a more 'interior life' was reflected in a series of interior paintings. She said ..." A beautiful life is to be lived in the shadows, but with peace, order and tranquillity". Excellent exhibition on at the moment at Pallant House.
